Canada House — Japandi Residential Interior Design & Custom Millwork, Coquitlam, BC

Located in Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada House is a Japandi-style three-level private residence designed for a young couple and their newborn, shaped around openness, clarity, and functional daily living. The home’s generous ceiling heights and layered volumes called for a calm, restrained interior language. Valecasa led the interior design, developing custom millwork concepts, spatial detailing, and material direction while coordinating closely with local architect Kapoor Home Design Ltd. and builder Monument Enterprises Ltd. throughout implementation in Canada.

Blending Japanese minimalism with Scandinavian warmth, the interior draws on principles of shibui restraint and wabi-sabi material honesty. The entry sequence is anchored by a sculptural bonsai composition, framed by vertical timber detailing inspired by traditional kumiko rhythm, charred shou sugi ban wood finishes (scorched wood), hand-textured plaster walls, and custom hammered timber panels (hammered wood). Carefully layered lighting reinforces a quiet, contemplative atmosphere across the main living spaces.

Private areas continue this restrained material palette with a focus on comfort and longevity. Bathrooms reference the serene spatial character of Edition Hotels through large-format travertine surfaces and AXOR fixtures, while the primary bathroom introduces a structured ceiling grid that evokes the feeling of an exterior courtyard (indoor–outdoor ceiling design). Every element was selected for durability, warmth, and long-term residential comfort.
